Leaving home doesn't have to mean leaving your family behind! At UAB, we believe it's important for parents to be knowledgable about UAB and the services and support offered here and we know that healthy parental support and encouragement can be crucial factors in a student's academic success.
Parent Orientation is an optional 1 1/2-day program designed to answer questions and address concerns, learn how best to help your student adjust to a new environment, and welcome all of you into the UAB family. Even parents familiar with the UAB campus will learn something new at Parent Orientation!
Each session offers a comprehensive introduction to UAB's services and resources, provides details on important policies, and includes valuable tips and insights every UAB parent should know. Parents will also:
- interact with UAB administrators, faculty, staff, and student Orientation Leaders (OLs);
- get expert advice on becoming the parent of a UAB student;
- get answers on everything from majors and degree requirements to financial aid, housing, meal plans, and more;
- visit residence halls and discover the advantages of living on campus; and
- develop a network of UAB friends by interacting with other parents.
The cost of Parent Orientation (up to 2 parents or adult family members) is included in the student's $150 enrollment fee. Additional reservations for step-parents or other adult family members may be made at the cost of $40 per person.
UAB encourages all parents to become a part of a new tradition - a group providing parents with a way to get involved, get information, and get the support they need. The UAB Parents Association encourages communication and understanding between parents and the university, enhances the college experience for students and their familes, provides opportunities for parent involvement with UAB, distributes information on student development trends, and regularly keeps parents up to date on important news affecting their students. Members enjoy access to the Parents Helpline and Web site, discounted tickets to the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center, invitations to special events, newsletter, and more. The Parents Association also sponsors activities such as Parent Orientation and other yearly events. Parents can join this important and influential group by submitting the registration form by mail or online. Membership fee per household is $50.
