Dr. Winfield Fisher received his M.D. degree from the School of Medicine at St. Louis University in 1978. He then completed an internship at the Bethesda Naval Hospital from 1978 to 1979 and residences there from 1979 to 1984. Dr.Fisher also trained under the legendary Dr.Charles Drake, at the University of Western Ontario. He was then board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1987. He joined the faculty at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1991, and served as President of the Southern Neurosurgical Society in 2006. He is currently the director of the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, one of the largest units in the nation.
In addition to areas of general neurosurgery, Dr.Fisher specializes in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and carotid stenosis. Additionally, he treats trigeminal neuralgia and peripheral nerve tumors. Dr.Fisher also specializes in the use of Gamma Knife to treat a variety of intracranial conditions.
