Dr. Barton L. Guthrie, received his B.S. in psychology, followed by an M.D. degree, from the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1980. Dr.Guthrie then pursued post-doctoral studies in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, at UAB. Subsequently, he trained in neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic, followed by a fellowship at Stanford University. Between 1988-1992, Dr.Guthrie was an assistant professor at the George Washington University, before finally arriving to the UAB Division of Neurosurgery in 1993. He currently serves as the Director of the UAB Gamma Knife and Radiosurgery Center, and Director of Computer-Assisted Neurosurgery (CANS) at UAB.
A board-certified diplomat of the AANS, Dr.Guthrie has served on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Computer-aided Surgery, and the Journal of Radiosurgery. Additionally, he has served in leadership roles within the Neurosurgical Society of Alabama , and the Southern Neurosurgical Society.
Throughout the years, Dr.Guthrie has led a career of innovation. He holds several patents for technology related to image-guided surgery, and was co-founder of Emageon, a now publicly traded company on NASDAQ. His original work with Emageon, pioneered the era of medical image viewing on the standard desktop computer. This work now resides in a permanent collection at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, in Washington D.C.
Dr. Guthrie has numerous research interests, and directs several clinical investigation protocols, including the optimization of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's Disease and other movement disorders. He specializes in the treatment of movement disorders, surgery and radiosurgery of brain tumors, in addition to general neurosurgery practice.
