R. Shane Tubbs, Ph.D.

Shane TubbsDr. Tubbs is associate professor of Cell Biology and Neurosurgery and one of three gross anatomists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a full-time surgeon's assistant at the Children's Hospital, Birmingham, AL. He is an Alabama native and began practice in 1994. He earned his PhD in Anatomy in 2002 and has served as course director for gross anatomy for optometry, medical, nurse anesthesia, and surgical physician assistant students. In addition, he teaches surgical anatomy to residents in the School of Medicine and from other regional hospitals. He is the author of well over 400 peer reviewed publications most of which deal with the human nervous system. Dr. Tubbs has written over 20 book chapters and is editor and author of several books in press. His doctoral research was centered on an animal model for epilepsy with stimulation of the glossopharyngeal nerve to reduce seizure frequency, duration, and severity of induced seizures. With this research, neural pathways from this cranial nerve proximally into the brain and finally to the basolateral amygdala were identified and chemical blockade of these sites found to result in cessation of the effects of stimulation. Dr. Tubbs is an Editor for the journals Clinical Anatomy and Child's Nervous System and is an ad hoc reviewer for over 40 scientific journals.
